St. Joseph River and downtown South Bend on the approach to the city

Getting here

Fly into SBN, take the South Shore, or drive

South Bend International Airport is west of downtown and Notre Dame. The South Shore Line ends at the airport, not on campus. Chicago airports add a long ground leg, while football, graduation, and move-in traffic can slow the final streets around Notre Dame.

Airport, rail terminus, and Notre Dame traffic

The airport and South Shore terminal are west of town.

SBN is west of downtown, and the South Shore Line terminates at the airport complex. Notre Dame and downtown require a taxi, ride service, rental car, or other road transfer from there. Chicago airports offer more flights but add a much longer ground trip.

  • South Shore timetable entries use Eastern Time at South Bend and Central Time at most other stations.
  • Football, graduation, move-in, construction, and winter weather can alter the final streets and parking approach to Notre Dame.

South Bend International Airport

SBN is the local airport and the simplest arrival when its schedule fits. Taxis and permitted ride services pick up outside the terminal; rental cars are useful only if the trip extends beyond campus and downtown.

Chicago airports

O’Hare and Midway offer more flights, but neither is a South Bend airport. Compare the full drive, rental-car return, tolls, and event traffic against a connection into SBN before choosing a lower fare.

Driving from Chicago or Indianapolis

The highway portion is usually the easy part. Football, move-in, graduation, construction, and winter weather affect the last miles. Check Notre Dame parking instructions before entering the campus district instead of relying on a generic map pin.

South Shore Line and regional rail

Trains run between downtown Chicago’s Millennium Station and South Bend International Airport. Published times use Central Time except at South Bend, which is listed in Eastern Time. Check the current timetable, then arrange the airport-to-campus or airport-to-hotel transfer separately.

Before boarding the South Shore Line

Read service updates as well as the timetable. The operator revised schedules in March 2026 and advises riders to confirm train times. South Bend’s Eastern Time listing differs from most stations on the line, which use Central Time.

From the airport to town or campus

The rail platform, airline terminal, taxi pickup, and ride-service pickup share the airport complex. Notre Dame and downtown still require a road transfer. Confirm pickup availability after late arrivals rather than assuming the train completes the whole trip.
